The Virtual Health Information Network is supported and sponsored by multiple organisations. It was established with catalyst funding in 2016 from the University of Otago, University of Auckland and Massey University, with support from the Ministry of Health. The same year the National Science Challenge Healthier Lives funded a stream of work badged under the VHIN. This National Science Challenge Healthier Lives (NSC HL) has contributed to funding the core infrastructure of the Network.
